What is Yoga Nidra

Often translated as “yogic sleep,” Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practised lying down. You will be guided through awareness of the body, breath, and sensations, with an invitation to rest while remaining aware.

Often translated as “yogic sleep, Yoga Nidra is a practice of relaxing consciously while cultivating deeper awareness.

Pratyahara

Patanjali describes pratyahara as the withdrawal of the senses. In Yoga Nidra, we begin to move our attention away from the external world and toward our inner experience. The body becomes still, the senses begin to turn inward, and awareness remains.

Sankalpa is an intention or resolve.

During Yoga Nidra, the same intention is repeated when the mind is deeply relaxed and receptive. Like planting a seed in prepared soil, the purpose isn’t simply to get something you desire, but to consciously strengthen the direction you want your mind and life to move toward.

Nyasa

Yoga Nidra also draws from the tantric practice of nyasa, where awareness and mantra are systematically directed through different parts of the physical body as a way of bringing deeper awareness to the body. Swami Satyananda adapted elements of this practice into the rotation of consciousness used in Yoga Nidra.

Through practice, you cultivate your own capacity to illuminate the mind and allow intuitive inner knowledge to emerge.

Ranju teaches Yoga Nidra following the tradition of Swami Satyananda Saraswati, founder of the Bihar School of Yoga. He developed and systematized Yoga Nidra by drawing from traditional tantric practices and making them accessible as a guided practice.
